Are you looking to become an expert in your field? The process to becoming an expert is simple, if you are willing to put in the time, and follow my advice. There are three main steps to take in becoming an expert in your field. First, you must pick the right thing that matters. Second, you must have genuine interest. Third, you must learn to create more value. This is the blueprint for you become an expert. Let me explain further.
First you need to have interest in a specific area. The focused area must also be something that matters to other people. For someone just starting out, you can not start with topics that are too broad. This area should be specific. For example, if you want to be an expert in business, you need to hone in on a specific area such as marketing. However, that is still too broad. Continue to peel off the layers of to arrive at core topics. For example, you can teach businesses how to utilize social media or sales people how to increase referrals. You if you want to teach business administrators how to execute, you begin by becoming and knowledgeable on time management, and organization. Once you have narrowed your focus, it is vital that you assess your attitude toward the subject .
The most important characteristic that you must have in any topic is passion. In his book “Outliers”, Malcolm Gladwell, says that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert. That’s right, T-E-N thousand hours. If you want to put in that kind of time, passion is a definite must! When you have passion, you take ownership of your subject. When you have passion others will sense your enthusiasm and readily call upon you for your opinion. When you have passion you are more likely to continue your work. You will constantly read and work hands-on. With the experience gained, you will discover methods to deliver and create more value.
This brings me to my last point–creating value. Experts take existing information and create new knowledge. Creating new knowledge is to develop information in innovative ways, deliver concepts in ways people have not already fathomed or communicated effectively. This is not always easy. Not to discourage you, but it can take possibly years to create new information, because you have to have a foundation . Research scientists are constantly creating and executing studies. Many times, those studies do not turn out as hypothesized. They continue to tweak methods until valuable information can be gained. As you become an expert in your field of choosing, you will find out what works and what doesn’t work through experience. You will be able to understand what combination of solutions can be tested to yield a desired output.
I believe that if you have you the components of this blueprint , you will be well on your way to becoming an expert in your focused area. Over time as you become an expert in one area, you will branch out to become an expert in other areas.
