I have an upcoming post on 7 Ways to Create Habits That Stick. However, first, I wanted to take a moment to write about some of my habits and how they affect my life. After you go through, them I encourage you to write down some of your good and bad habits and how they affect your life.
Habit are simply conscious or subconscious behaviors that have positive or negative outcomes. I have a number of positives habits that have transformed my life.
To effectively managed my time after work during the week, I prepare my lunch meals and dinners for the week on Sundays. I’ve begun ironing and hanging out clothes for Monday-Friday. This has freed up my time, and now feel like I have more time for my self vs preparing for work right after I leave from it.
Knowing that I am drained of energy by the end of the day, I go to the gym at the crack of dawn, when there are few people there. That way, I can get more done without having to wait for a machine or set of dumbbells. I get more exercises in without losing the burn or reducing my heart rate.
DO you know that award feeling when you walk into a room 20 minutes late. Yeah, I hate that. So, I have to make a conscious effort to at least 15 minutes early. I even have my clocks set 30 minutes fast. I like to thinking of it in the sense of being 30 minutes ahead of the rest of the world.
Waking up early on the Weekend. Usually the weekends are for relaxing and sleeping in. But for me, I typically use my Saturday as a time to get things done before noon so I can chill out for the rest of the day!
Paying all of my bills on the first of the month. I once had a habit of collecting late fees until I realized just how much I pay in them, so I cut that crap out real quick! Just like the Antoine Dodson’s popular quote, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!” (post it)
At the same time, I have number of bad habits that continue to hinder me or affect my goals in some way. .
I’ll be honest and tell you that I am one who lets dirty clothes and dishes pile up for longer than any human should! I just hate washing clothes! If I could hire someone to do that, they’d be well paid! Seriously. This leads to a secondary bad habit…Instead of washing clothes or dishes, I go and buy new ones on occasion.
I suffer from anxiety. While I do not have full blow panic attacks like some people, I do am am affected because it makes me apathetic to deadlines and urgency. I will procrastinate like no other.
Another bad habit, I have is passing up socializing opportunities more than I should. By nature I am an introvert. While I tend to be on the more extroverted side, I enjoy my time–especially when I’ve spent the day working on cases that can become rather taxing mentally and even emotionally. I feel that after work it is a time to relax, not go to happy hour! ‘Happy hours’ for me is cooking dinner or watching movies with a friend, playing a game or writing! I’ve realized that bars are not for me. Bars are so loud with people competing to talk! While you might be thinking, “this dude is crazy; no happy hour, no life.” My defense is that I’m not a drinker like some of you pros, so this association puts me off. Clubs are worse. It’s a bunch of sober or semi-tipsy people just standing around attempting to get drunk, watching other drunk people convulse before they jump in to attempt to dance on the dancefloor. Again, there is no talking, if there is, there is a bunch of repeating, “Huh, what did you say?” Nevermind. Second, I prefer to meet over an activity…..not dancing. So on those occasions where I do “go out”, I have to suggest, certain things like pool or bowling when I do. But I say all of that to show you that we can find excuses to not do something, not matter how logical. Sometimes you just have to do it without thinking about anything else other than “yes.” I’m guilty.
Another major habit I have is giving into impulses to spend or eat badly. Ever since I started working out, my craving has been for Snickers bar and sugar cookies. Before I started working out, I really didn’t care for sweets! Insane. I had to cut it out, but everyone in a while I have a strong “need” for a Snicker. Sometimes, I fight it other times, not so well—at 10pm.
Feel free to share some of your habit in the comment box below!
